History
Pioneers since 1845. Looking to the future on the firm foundations of the past.
Founded by Jean-Baptiste Meura in Tournai, Belgium, the company has been at the forefront of brewing technology for nearly two centuries with famous inventions such as the mash filter, Aflosjet, Meura2001 filter, Meurabrew, Meurastream, Carbo Mill,... A member of the French Boccard family group since 1998, the company is recognised for its brewing technology expertise, worldwide.
Meura: a short history of a long tradition
1845
Meura is founded by Jean-Baptiste Meura in Tournai (Belgium).
1891
Philippe Meura, son of the founder, designs the first prototype mash filter.
1901
Philippe Meura succeeds in constructing a perfectly working mash filter, which had undisputably the advantage over the lauter tun, as regards the speed of filtration as well as the yield. It’s the year of the commercial introduction of Meura’s mash filters.
1967
The mechanical plate shifting was patented. At the same time, cotton cloths were replaced by polypropylene filter cloths, thus avoiding the need to remove and clean cloths between each brew.
1970
The recovery of filtered wort via a series of taps was replaced by a closed system. The first Meura filter combining these improvements was put into operation in the USA. This fully automated filter was able to run at 12 brews per day and if needed could go to 16 brews per day. Again, a landmark in the beer brewing industry!
1987
The first industrial Meura2001 is installed and tested at the Pied-Boeuf brewery (Belgium). It was a Meura2001 designed for throws of 6 tons of barley malt
1988
The Boccard family (Lyon, France) enters into Meura’s shareholding.
1989
The first Meura2001 is sold to the Palm brewery (Belgium).2001
Introduction of the Mechamasher, Meura’s mechanical pre-masher.
2002
Introduction of the Carbomill, Meura’s hammer mill working under a CO2 atmosphere.
2004
Meura moves to new premises (offices and workshop) in Péruwelz (Belgium).
2005
Inhouse production of the Classicmill, Meura’s ventilated hammermill with horizontal shaft.
2006
Introduction of the first Meurabrew, Meura's continuous brewhouse.
2007
Meura enters into partnership with PRAJ Industries Limited, India for the Indian market.
2010
Development of the Meura2001 Hybrid, having chambers made with one cloth and one membrane hence improving the sparging efficiency.
2011
Meura celebrates the sale of its 250th Meura2001.
2014
Industrial introduction of the Meurastream, a Meura process reducing by about 50% the thermal energy compared to a brewhouse without energy recovery and 35% for a brewhouse with vapour condensation! Excess of hot water is reduced by 30%!
2015
Meura Technologies and Services moves to new premises in the scientific park of Louvain-la-neuve where a laboratory and a pilot brewery, equipped with the entire range of Meura's technologies, are installed.
The membrane vacuum device is introduced on the Meura2001 filter. It repositions the membrane back on the chamber after the compression; leading to an improved filter filling and sparging, while extending the membrane lifetime.
2016
Introduction of the Flexiboil: Meura’s auto-adjustable wort spreader able to have a 1%/h and 10%/h evaporation rate keeping the same spreading pattern!
2018
Introduction of the Meurastream Green, a further development of the Meurastream concept with additional reduction of the thermal energy for mash heating.
2020
Introduction of the Meura2001 Thin Hybrid allowing an increase in the capacity of an existing Meura2001 by almost 12%!
2023
Meura sells its 500th Meura2001, maintaining its world leading position in mash filtration.
